Delayed Reaction

By Nikki Benjamin

Jeremiah 8:22 “Is there no balm in Gilead, is there no physician? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

Have you ever suffered a hurt so deep and you were relieved to find that the wound appeared healed over on the outside only to realize later there was internal bleeding? I mean the very moment everything seemed to be getting back to normal after your life has been shaken by a nasty fall. That fall may have been the loss of a friendship, the loss of a loved one, a divorce or the pain of public scrutiny. You had gotten over the malaise and tenderness and had begun a process of adjustment when all of a sudden; one event or a memory sends a deluge of emotions that you used to feel while in the midst of that painful time in your life…a spiritual déjà vu of sorts.

Then run back to the Savior and ask Him to help you. Run with reckless abandon to the Great Physician. Run as you ran for your mother when you scraped you knee, crying and bleeding. Let Him soothe your aching soul with the balm of Gilead. The prophet, Jeremiah, ask “Is there no balm in Gilead?” And if there is such a salve then...he retorts “Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” So go find that place of refuge where your infirmed heart can be mended. I’m convinced that when He hears our cry, like the loving parent of our childhood, he knows just what to do. He knows how deep the wound is. He knows just how much to your heart He is to apply the blood. Ask Him to help you. Ask Him to heal you.
